Tacoma is a vibrant waterfront city along Commencement Bay known for its cultural renaissance, artistic identity, and historic architecture. Incorporated in 1875 and chosen as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, the city earned the nickname City of Destiny. Tacoma has transformed from an industrial port into a major arts destination, shaped in part by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly and the studio glass movement. The Museum District features the Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Washington State History Museum, and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. Neighborhoods range from historic brick warehouses in the Brewery District to Victorian homes in the North End. The 760-acre Point Defiance Park and the waterfront promenade along Ruston Way showcase the city’s natural beauty, with views of Mount Rainier and Puget Sound. Sounder trains and Interstate 5 connect Tacoma to Seattle, and Sea-Tac Airport is about 30 minutes north.
