How to find your WHY in real estate

Real estate can be a wild ride. Some weeks you’re crushing it. Closings, calls, referrals. Other weeks… nothing. I’ve been there. And what’s kept me consistent through it all isn’t luck, or even motivation. It’s knowing my “why.”

Recently, I was invited by RISMedia to share my thoughts on why defining your “why” matters in real estate. The response was incredible. If the idea of finding your “why” resonated with you, let’s talk about how to make it happen.

A Simple Way to Find Your “Why”

Take 30-45 minutes this week. No phone, no emails, just you and a notebook. Sit down, write, and dig deep.

1. Start by answering a few honest questions:

  • Why did I get into real estate?
  • What did I think this career would give me?
  • What would true success look and feel like?

Don’t overthink these, just write whatever comes up.

2. Use the “5 Whys”

Take one of your answers and ask why five times until you hit something real.

“I want to make more money.”

  • Why? → “So I can invest.”
  • Why? → “So I can have security.”
  • Why? → “So my family doesn’t go through what I did growing up.”

That’s the truth right there — that’s your why.

3. Picture Your Future Self

Close your eyes and see your life 5 years from now. Where are you living? Who are you helping? What kind of agent, or leader, have you become? That vision connects today’s hustle to tomorrow’s reward.

4. Who Benefits When You Win

Write down 3 people (or groups) who benefit when you’re at your best. Your family, team, clients, or community. Your success isn’t just for you. Your “why” often shows up in those names.

5. Write It in One Sentence

Put it all together in a short, clear statement: “I’m in real estate to [impact/outcome] so that [emotional reason].”

  • “I’m in real estate to build financial freedom so my family never struggles.”
  • “I’m in real estate to help families start fresh and feel proud of their homes.”
  • “I’m in real estate to create options for myself and the people I love.”

Read it every morning for the next 7 days.

Once you reveal your why, your goals and your habits start to make sense.

I’d love to hear your “why.” When you have your sentence, share it on Instagram and tag @daviddeza_re_leader or send me a private message. I always enjoy seeing what inspires others in this business.
