The Biggest Portals and Brokerages are fighting over how property data is distributed
StreetEasy, owned by Zillow, has introduced new listing standards that affect how listings are made public, while Compass and its owned companies like Corcoran and Sotheby’s are pushing private listing networks and incentives designed to keep listings amongst their own brands and off consumer-facing portals. Compass’ approach is now receiving scrutiny from Congress, as well as State Attorneys General, consumer, housing, and civil-rights organizations. Brown Harris Stevens is not part of Zillow or StreetEasy, and we are not part of Compass or its affiliated brokerage network. Our only focus is on serving the goals of clients.

Despite the loud talk about private listings, our agents have access to shared industry systems, allowing them to identify and show properties that may not be broadly displayed on a particular public platform. Whatever a brokerage thinks about Zillow or StreetEasy’s business model, or whatever a portal thinks about a brokerage’s strategy, those corporate disagreements should never determine what information a buyer, seller or renter can access.
