Growing up, I assumed that by 27 I’d have a pretty good idea of what my future home would look like. Maybe I’d know where I wanted to settle down, or at the very least have a Zillow folder that somewhat resembled my budget. Instead, working in real estate has taught me that the definition of a “dream home” isn’t the most expensive home on the block or the one with the largest square footage, but the one that embodies your “dream life” best.
BuzzFeed.com released an article showing what $1 million can buy you across the country, and let’s just say your money travels further in some places than others. In New York City, that amount most likely means a modest apartment rather than a sprawling home. But if your dream life includes your favorite restaurants around the corner and your dog’s favorite park down the street, then maybe 700 square feet for just under a million feels like a bargain.
Across the country, the opposite can be true. Anchorage, Alaska, shows you can get nearly 10,000 square feet for just under $1 million. So, if your version of the dream involves a backyard for the dog, plenty of space, and a little peace and quiet, then I’d say it’s certainly dream home material as well.
Ultimately, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” version of everyone’s dream home. Whether it’s buying while mortgage rates are high or paying more for less space, the best choice is the one that fits the life you want to live. After all, when it comes to spending your money, the only thing that really matters is what matters to you.
