Flatlands

by

Flatlands is a residential neighborhood in southeastern Brooklyn bordered by Marine Park, Canarsie, and Midwood. Originally settled in the 17th century as part of the Dutch town of Nieuw Amersfoort, it developed primarily in the mid-20th century with low-rise housing. The area consists largely of detached and semi-detached one- and two-family homes, along with some multi-family buildings and garden-style apartments. Commercial activity is concentrated along Flatbush Avenue, Kings Highway, and Avenue U, where grocery stores, retail shops, and services are located. Flatlands does not have subway stations within its boundaries, but multiple bus routes connect to nearby lines. Marine Park, Brooklyn’s largest public park, borders the neighborhood and provides extensive open space and recreational facilities.
