Yampa is a quiet high-country town in southern Routt County known as the Gateway to the Flat Tops. Established in the late 19th century as a stagecoach stop and incorporated in 1906, the town grew as an agricultural supply center for surrounding ranches, farms, and lumber operations. Yampa retains an authentic Western character with unpaved streets, historic timber-frame and false-front architecture, and wide views of Egeria Park, the broad valley surrounding town. Its location near the headwaters of the Yampa River provides immediate access to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway. The surrounding high country offers remote alpine lakes, exceptional fly fishing, big game hunting, and dramatic basalt cliffs, including the Devil’s Causeway. Steamboat Springs and its ski resort lie about 30 miles north. Yampa offers a peaceful, rural setting shaped by its pioneer heritage and mountain surroundings.
