Surprise is a fast-growing northwest Valley city known for its scenic desert surroundings, mountain views, and abundant recreation. Founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, who reportedly said she would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much, and incorporated in 1960, the city has transformed from a small agricultural settlement into a major suburban hub. The Surprise Recreation Campus hosts spring training for the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers, along with festivals throughout the year. Parks, an aquatic center, a tennis complex, and access to White Tank Mountain Regional Park offer outdoor recreation close to home. Petroglyphs line the Waterfall Trail in the nearby White Tank Mountains, and Lake Pleasant lies about 40 minutes away. Master-planned communities and expanding shopping corridors along Bell Road and Loop 303 support the city’s growth. Grand Avenue and Loop 303 connect Surprise to Phoenix and the greater Valley.
