Craig is a high-desert community along the Yampa River in northwestern Colorado and serves as the commercial center and county seat of Moffat County. Known as the Elk Hunting Capital of the World, the town has deep roots in agriculture, ranching, coal mining, and power generation. Its historic downtown features local shops and the Museum of Northwest Colorado, housed in a 1922 armory and home to a nationally recognized collection of working cowboy artifacts. The 1906 Marcia, the private rail car of railroad builder David Moffat, is another downtown landmark. Vast public lands, covering more than half of Moffat County, surround the town, with Yampa River State Park and Dinosaur National Monument within reach. The region’s large migratory elk herds make it a premier destination for big game hunting and outdoor recreation. Craig maintains an authentic Western character shaped by its ranching and mining heritage and rugged surroundings.
