Irvine is a master-planned city in Orange County spanning more than 55 square miles and organized into numerous residential villages, commercial districts, business centers, parks, and open spaces. The city was incorporated in 1971 and includes a variety of residential architectural styles and housing types. Irvine is home to the University of California, Irvine, Concordia University Irvine, and Irvine Valley College, along with major employment centers and research facilities. The Irvine Spectrum Center, Great Park, and Orange County Great Park Sports Complex are among the city’s notable destinations. Extensive parks, trails, and preserved open space provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. Major transportation routes including Interstate 5, Interstate 405, State Route 133, and State Route 261 provide connections throughout Orange County and Southern California. Irvine’s planned layout integrates residential areas with shopping, employment, education, and recreation.
