Coronado is a coastal city on a peninsula in San Diego Bay, across the bay from downtown San Diego. Incorporated in 1890, the city has a long history as a seaside destination, with the Hotel del Coronado serving as one of its best-known landmarks. Coronado is connected to the mainland by the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and the Silver Strand. Orange Avenue serves as a central commercial corridor with shops, galleries, restaurants, and historic architecture. The city also includes beaches, waterfront parks, recreational areas, and residential neighborhoods. Naval Base Coronado, including Naval Air Station North Island, occupies a significant portion of the peninsula. Coronado Beach, the waterfront, and nearby parks provide opportunities for swimming, walking, cycling, and other outdoor activities.
