Last week, I lost one of my closest friends, suddenly, and to natural causes.
Darin Tansey was not only an incredibly successful broker but also one of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever known.
Over ten years ago, I asked Brown Harris Stevens CEO, Bess Freedman, to tour a home we built on the beach at 6440 North Bay Road, where Darin was representing us. She immediately called me afterward to say what a great guy (and how handsome) he was. That was the kind of impression Darin made on everyone lucky enough to cross his path.
He pushed me to be better, not just in real estate but as a person. He lived a life of discipline and health, starting his weekdays with 5 am gym sessions. I’d tell him how I loved to challenge myself in the gym, and he would laugh and say, “More weight, more reps, Flaco!” He gave me the confidence and strength to face my best and worst days. It was never just about the weight or the reps—it was about tackling life’s challenges and never giving up, no matter how heavy the load.
As a broker, Darin sold some of the most remarkable properties in Miami Beach, yet his success never changed him. He remained humble, grateful, and generous, with his time, his money, his handshakes, and his hugs.
At his celebration of life on Wednesday in Miami Beach, more than 400 people gathered, most of them friends and fellow brokers. It was a true testament to the kind of person Darin was. In a business that can become competitive or negative, he reminded us it doesn’t have to be that way. He showed that kindness, collaboration, and respect are what truly move the needle.
My wife, Awi, and I miss him terribly. But we will carry on his legacy and strive every day to be better, kinder, and stronger.
I encourage all our BHS brokers to take a moment to reflect on this. Be kind. Be patient. Be understanding. The deals will continue to come, but more importantly, so will the relationships that truly matter.
