Honoring the 24th Anniversary of September 11th: Organizations Continuing to Support Survivors and Families

This year marks the 24th anniversary of the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed New York City, the nation, and the world. While the years have passed, the needs of survivors, families, and first responders remain profound. Many continue to face health challenges, emotional trauma, and economic hardships. At the same time, communities across the country come together each year to honor the memory of those lost, pay tribute to the resilience of survivors, and reaffirm a shared commitment to service.

Numerous organizations remain dedicated to carrying forward the lessons of that day, offering essential resources, support, and education. From healthcare and counseling to volunteerism and memorial preservation, these groups remind us of the enduring power of community and compassion.

Here are some of the most impactful organizations continuing their work today:

VOICES of September 11th

Founded in 2002, VOICES provides long-term mental health resources to families of 9/11 victims, responders, and survivors, including those affected by related illnesses in the years since. Today, the organization continues to offer counseling, support groups, webinars, and workshops that foster resilience and healing. VOICES also partners with communities nationwide to help prepare for and recover from tragedies, ensuring its impact extends far beyond New York.

AmeriCorps 9/11 Day of Service

Each year, September 11th is recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Coordinated in part by AmeriCorps, it has grown to become the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the United States. Millions of Americans honor the day by volunteering in their communities—packing meals, mentoring youth, supporting veterans, and more. Opportunities can be found through the 9/11 Day website or AmeriCorps’ searchable volunteer portal.

The Never Forget Fund

Supporting the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the Never Forget Fund ensures the continued mission of commemorating the victims and educating future generations. The fund helps sustain exhibitions, programs, and educational initiatives that preserve the stories of that day. By supporting the Never Forget Fund, donors help safeguard the memory of 9/11 while inspiring dialogue about unity and resilience.

Tuesday’s Children

Originally formed in response to 9/11, Tuesday’s Children has since expanded its mission to serve families impacted by terrorism, military conflict, and mass violence around the world. Programs include youth mentoring, career guidance, mental health support, and community-building activities. More than two decades later, Tuesday’s Children continues to honor its promise to be “there for the long haul” for those whose lives were forever changed.

The New York Says Thank You Foundation

Born from the idea that New Yorkers should give back in gratitude for the outpouring of support received after 9/11, this foundation has engaged over 60,000 volunteers nationwide. Its initiatives include disaster relief projects, survivor empowerment programs, and educational efforts such as the 9/12 Generation Project, which equips teachers to educate students about 9/11 through service-based learning.
