Dear Friends: This apartment is more than four walls and a roof. It is stability. It is dignity.

Real estate is so much more than simply opening doors. It’s about helping people build – and sometimes rebuild – their lives.

While it’s easy to get caught up in dramatic headlines about expensive penthouses and celebrity moves, the most rewarding stories are simply about providing the best service for everyday people who are trying to find their place.

Brown Harris Stevens agents Don Correia and Sarah Buff recently received a heartfelt note of gratitude from a client who finally found their home after a great deal of hardship, including homelessness.

As the industry faces unprecedented change and discourse, it is inspiring to see that real estate has the power to literally change lives – and agents are the ones who can open doors to new hope and opportunity.

Thank you for taking time to read this note below, which we’ve shared with permission from the sender:

Dear Friends,

Friday, I received the keys to my apartment.

Those words may seem simple, but after everything that has happened over the past several months, they carry more meaning than I can express.

There were many times during this journey when I thought this day might never come. After being approved, facing repeated delays, changing caseworkers, inspections, paperwork issues, funding problems, and the very real possibility of losing the apartment altogether, I began to wonder if I would ever be able to leave the shelter system behind.

There were days when I felt defeated. Days when I felt invisible. Days when I questioned whether anyone truly understood how exhausting it is to do everything right and still feel stuck.

Yet through all of that, you listened.

You answered emails. You returned calls. You asked questions. You advocated. You cared.

While I know each of your offices serves countless people every day, you took the time to help me. What may have been one case among many for some of you was my entire future.

Friday, for the first time in a very long time, I unlocked the door to a place I can call my own. I stood inside my apartment and realized that I no longer have to wonder where I will be sleeping. I no longer have to live with the uncertainty and instability that have defined so much of my life. I have a home.

That is something many people take for granted. I never will.

To all of you who helped—Senator Bottcher’s office, elected officials, staff members, advocates, and everyone who made calls, sent emails, and worked behind the scenes—please know that your efforts changed my life.

This apartment is more than four walls and a roof. It is stability. It is dignity. It is hope. It is the opportunity to continue building a future for myself.

Thank you for helping me reach this day. I will carry your kindness and support with me for the rest of my life.
