Coming Home: The BHS Agent Spotlight on Catherine Witherwax

A fifth-generation Brooklynite with nearly $500 million in career sales, Catherine Witherwax brings a deep knowledge of the borough and a consistent, full-service approach to every client relationship. Drawn back to Brown Harris Stevens by its people and collaborative culture, Catherine returns home to BHS for the next chapter of her career. In this week’s BHS Agent Spotlight, she shares her outlook for Brooklyn’s fall market, a magical hidden corner near Park Slope, the principles behind her success, and much more.

Why did you decide to return home to BHS for the next chapter in your career?

The people. From my fellow Agents to the Support Staff to the Executive Team- everyone at BHS is here to support each other.  It’s the most collaborative environment that you’ll find the in the industry. I am a full-service agent and need to be at a firm where my clients and I can have that level of support matched from the first conversation through closing.

As we enter the Fall Market, what are you expecting in Brooklyn?

I’m excited for an active Fall Market in Brooklyn. I believe most buyers will continue to prefer fully renovated homes, which creates a great opportunity for buyers who are willing to look at less renovated homes and do the work needed to create their custom dream home. I would advise any buyer to partner with an experienced agent to help them find the perfect home.

Share a hidden secret of Park Slope and why you love it.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is close to Park Slope, and inside there is a small garden tucked away from the main path called the Shakespeare Garden. It’s stocked with fragrant flowers, herbs, and berries and is the most magical little corner in Brooklyn.

Share something few know about you.

I am a total Whale nerd. I think they are the most majestic creatures, and in high school I spent a summer out on a boat studying them and their feeding habits.

Closing on nearly $500M in business over the course of your career, what is a secret to success to share with your fellow agents?

Consistency- you need to always show up for yourself, your clients, and colleagues.

Knowledge- never stop learning, you can always learn something new and dig a little deeper.

Listen- learn to hear what people are actually saying, not what you expect them to say

As a fifth-generation Brooklynite, what are you most proud of about Brooklyn?

Our food! You can find food from almost anywhere in the world in Brooklyn.  Food brings us together and is the great global connector. What a beautiful way for us to have shared experiences with our neighbors.

Where are you going to celebrate a big deal and why?

Likely a local restaurant. Sofreh in Prospect Heights serves the most delicious and beautiful Persian cuisine. It’s always a special treat.

Share a photo in your camera roll of your phone that is meaningful to you and why?

When we bought our house in Prospect Heights, we were told that there used to be a grapevine in the backyard. After several years of love and care, the grapevine returned and has given us about 30 lbs. of grapes each year. I’ve always loved this photo of me and my kids with our backyard harvest.
