Before the Interview: What to Know and How to Prepare for a Co-op Board Meeting

Receiving an invitation to a cooperative board interview is a strong signal that your application has cleared an important hurdle. While it’s not a guarantee of approval, it does mean that the Board sees you as a potentially suitable fit for the building and wants to learn more.

The interview gives Board members the opportunity to ask follow-up questions, clarify elements of your financials or background, and understand your intentions as a future resident. This step is as much about confirming facts as it is about getting a sense of who you are as a neighbor.

Before the meeting, it's helpful to understand that interview formats can vary widely. You might find yourself in a casual meeting held in a board member’s apartment or in a more formal setting with several members seated across from you. In recent years, many co-op boards have moved interviews online, using platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Preparing for both in-person and virtual formats will help you present yourself confidently, no matter the setting. Dress professionally, test your tech ahead of time if it's remote, and have a quiet, well-lit space ready if needed.

It’s also important to remember that Board members are fellow residents volunteering their time to help run and protect the integrity of their building community. Because of this, you'll likely encounter a range of personalities and communication styles. Some members may be warm and welcoming, while others might be more formal or reserved. Try not to take any aloofness personally—everyone’s goal is to assess how well you’ll integrate into the cooperative environment. Approach the interview with respect, openness, and a clear understanding of why you want to be part of the community.
